100 Yuan Grenade

Justine Smith, Boom, 2012, Archival embossed ink jet print on 330gsm Somerset satin enhanced paper, edition of 90 (£300)

Using red 100 Yuan Chinese bank notes that feature Chairman Mao, the founder of the People’s Republic of China, Smith’s work is concerned with the lnk between money and the wielding of political power. Here her hand grenade, without its pin, suggests a tension between Mao’s communist legacy and its violent history and China’s ascent to major world power and the inherent paradox of it as a capitalist/communist state.

Seen at 'The First Cut' exhibition at the Manchester Art Gallery
